How has being a parent changed your athletic goals and activities?
Being a parent has changed my athletic goals in so many ways. In some ways chasing those is more difficult and takes quite a bit more coordination. But more importantly, it has made those goals and achievements so much much sweeter. Seeing my family at the finish line of any race is truly the most amazing feeling.
How do you balance training with parenthood?
A lot of scheduling! And a lot of early mornings, and weekend nap times. You have to be creative, and prioritize. I am without a doubt a better parent when I have carved out that time for myself.
What are some of your favorite cycling memories with your kids?
Watching my son learn to ride a bike! One of those moments you will never forget.
How has your mom encouraged you in cycling?
Even though my mom is not a cyclist herself, she encourages us and supports us in all of our athletic endeavors. She has been there for my sister and I on countless sidelines growing up, and now at countless Ironman and marathon races as adults.
What is your favorite cycling memory with your mom?
Growing up we would ride around the lake of our family's cabin. It was a long ride for my sister and I at the time, 13 hilly miles. My mom encouraged us, and patiently, shepherded us the whole way while we complained terribly until the very end. Very likely the start of my love for endurance racing!

How has being a parent changed your athletic goals and activities?
Rest and recovery is now child care and cleaning up. Sleep would be nice at some point.
How do you balance training with parenthood?
With difficulty. It has to get done. This morning I ran at 5am then was at the pool for 7:15. I am spending all day with the kids and have my next session at 6pm when my husband is on bath time. Hopefully I get an hour of sleep in between Max waking up with his last 3 teeth.
What are some of your favorite cycling memories with your kids?
We love being outside and getting them on their bikes can be quite scary as they don't seem to see danger. It's fun for them even though it's stressful for us some times.
Dunte Hector
Product ManagerDunte and his mom Ann love exploring the city on bikes together. Ann’s favorite way to ride is on bike paths or gravel trails. Dunte loves riding any bike, any place as often as possible.
How has your mom encouraged you in cycling?
She gave me the freedom to explore! It was always okay to hop on my bike and go anywhere and everywhere, then she was willing to listen to the stories.
Lately, her enthusiasm for riding keeps me fired up, too. When I know she's open to the experience, we can go explore new trails together, ride to new places in the city and outside the city. We're even planning a few big rides together, all of which motivates me to look for new places and new rides.
What is your favorite cycling memory with your mom?
My favorite memory is probably the first time we rode out from her house, around a state park, and back. It was her first ride over 20 miles. We were both so excited about that! It's just one of those early milestones as a cyclist and now she knows how satisfying that can be.
Whitney Dawson
Stages Product Marketing ManagerWhitney competed in triathlons for many years, from sprint to Ironman distance. She dabbled in cyclocross, and found a love of bike touring with her now fiance. Most recently she has gotten into mountain biking and bikepacking. Whitney says, “Being on one of my many bikes always brings immediate happiness.” Whitney’s mom Bridget Dawson was a professional triathlete in the late 1980s and got Whitney started in triathlon at a young age.
How has your mom encouraged you in cycling?
My mom had me doing triathlons starting at age 10 on my little blue mountain bike. I swam through college but immediately dove head first into triathlon as an adult, very often training with my mom and with mutual friends. It took many years before I was finally (barely & not all the time) faster than her. Her expertise was Olympic distance, where she was age group world champion in 2012 and national champion a whole bunch of times, and I got more into full Ironmans. We ended up racing a ton of 70.3s together including world championships. It was so fun supporting each other at races, nationals for her, she came to Kona with me, but I really loved being on the course together and going for long group adventure rides. That is an unbeatable and really unique experience, to be able to participate at such a high level, together.
Summer of 2016 she was hit by a distracted driver and killed while on a training ride. As such a huge member of the community, the massive outpouring of support caused us to create a scholarship fund in her name, with a mission of helping more girls get into the sport of triathlon. It took a break last year with no races, but we are sorting through this year.
What is your favorite cycling memory with your mom?
It is impossible to choose one. There are so many awesome training rides that come to mind, like up Mt. Lemmon in Tucson and all over the Portland area. When I first started dating my now fiance, we rode our bikes down to San Luis Obispo where my parents moved in 2014. My mom met us on her bike at the end of Big Sur to ride us home. It was the first time they met and I'll never forget that! We ended in Morro Bay and went straight into the ocean together.

How has your mom encouraged you in cycling?
My mother is my biggest cheerleader and most definitely my #1 fan! Wholeheartedly supports my every endeavor and constantly encourages me to be and give of my best with every pedal stroke. With endless phone calls and pep talks, she’s always kept me going.
What is your favorite cycling memory with your mom?
I do a lot of racing in the Zwift Racing League and my mom learned how to use discord just so she would never miss a race. We live in two separate countries so each time I race and know that she takes time out from whatever she’s doing just to watch, means the world to me.

How has being a parent changed your athletic goals and activities?
Everything is pared back, gone are the days of my husband and I getting home from work and doing 1-2 hour weekday workouts with longer runs and rides on the weekends But we sneak in early morning or lunch workouts as often as we can, we do family strength workouts in the basement (Addi tries all our functional strength movements and Rusty jumps in his bouncer), and we put the kids in the jogging stroller on Saturday mornings... soon Rusty will be old enough to ride in the Burley and we can do family rides!
How do you balance training with parenthood?
My answer to that is ever changing. I often choose sleep over a workout because of long nights being awake with the kiddos. And I'm always learning to lower my expectations for this season of training, accept bad weeks as they come, and hope for a better week this time. My goal in this season is to not quit, and as long as I don't quit, I consider that a success.
What are some of your favorite cycling memories with your kids?
We haven't had too many yet, but I did a Sprint tri when Addi was 1, and my husband Colin rode around the course with her in the Burley to cheer me on at different points. That was a really fun day for me to be able to compete and for them to have sweet time together. A few weeks later we swapped and he raced while Addi and I cheered.
What is your favorite cycling memory with your mom?
My parents got a tandem bike when we were old enough to ride and my mom would ride in front with one of us girls in the back seat. She'd take us to friends' houses, school, or to Blockbuster to rent a movie.
Sean Coffey
Global Marketing Director
Sean competed in cyclocross and road races for decades and is currently training for summer and big days in the saddle.
How has your mom encouraged you in cycling?
She didn't always, when I was in high school she was too busy worrying about all the risks racing requires, the expense, and pushing myself too hard. Later on she came to understand cycling and watches the Tour de France and loves talking about the important stages.
What is your favorite cycling memory with your mom?
My mom is into quilting and embroidery and so we have a lot of cycling-themed quilts and embroidery around the house!
Peter Sebestyen
