Macky Franklin

DISCIPLINE: Enduro

HOMEBASE: Taos, NM

Macky Franklin is an American professional mountain bike racer, based out of Taos, NM. In 2013, after a seven-year career as a top US cross-country racer, he began racing Enduro downhill and has since made that discipline his focus. In 2015, he placed 2nd in the US Enduro Cup overall, in addition to winning the first Enduro Cup stop in Moab, UT. He also raced the entire 2015 Enduro World Series to gain experience on the international stage. In 2016, he will take on a combination of Enduro Cup, Big Mountain Enduro and Enduro World Series Events.

MACKY’S FAVORITE WORKOUT: “Manual Intervals (made them up myself) – Choose a fairly long hill (3 or so minutes to climb). Climb it at climbing repeat pace (Zone 4). At the top, turn around and practice doing manuals on the way down. Not only do you get a good workout, but you get to practice your manuals and practice a difficult skill while you’re not totally recovered.

WHAT’S ON HIS DASH: ” I have a couple different screens depending on the type of ride I’m doing. For downhill days and unstructured rides I have one screen for duration, distance and time of day, another with altitude, total ascent, total descent and temperature, and a final one with max, average and current speed. For intervals I have one screen with lap time, power, heart rate and cadence, and another with ride time, distance and total ascent.”

Macky Franklin's Enduro Training

Get Workout

I like having Stages for training and racing enduro because it shows you some really interesting things. The meter helps you realize how hard you’re working while going downhill and how much power you put out sprinting out of corners and on flat sections. While XC was all about training for climbing, enduro is about putting out power for shorter periods of time and trying to gain a few seconds over the course of a 5-minute run. I also enjoy seeing how much total work I’ve done over a day of riding or racing including both the race and transition stages.”

PRE-RACE RITUALS:
Growing up in a large and punctually-impaired family, I learned that it was much better not to have a pre-race ritual, because then it didn’t matter when there wasn’t time for it to happen!

FAVORITE THING ABOUT TRAINING:
Finishing and feeling like you’ve accomplished something.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT RACING:
|Testing myself against the best racers in the world.

SPIRIT ANIMAL:
I like to think it’s a tiger, but my friends say it’s actually a golden retriever.
